      Home-Grown School Meal Programme

      Kenya, Indonesia, Ecuador & Philippines

Home-Grown School Meal Programmes support local smallholder farmers to develop better practices for growing and harvesting crops, which are provided to local schools. Members of the community turn these crops into nutritious meals for children – often the only nutritious meal the children receive that day.

      Kenya:

Maria-Andrea Rodriguez is the 2014 Unilever Foundation Global Ambassador for the World Food Programme (WFP). She travelled from Colombia to Kenya to see how the Unilever Foundation is supporting WFP to implement an innovative school meals programme that provides nutritious, cooked meals to children while enhancing the livelihoods of smallholder farmers.

Watch the video below of Maria-Andrea’s trip to Kenya and see the school meals programme in action.

      Ecuador:

In Ecuador, the Unilever Foundation began supporting a Home-Grown School Meals Programme in April 2014. This programme supports the livelihoods of smallholder farmers whilst addressing childhood malnutrition. Smallholder farmers grow fruit and vegetables and earn a sustainable income by selling their produce to markets and local schools. Parents and teachers cook nutritious meals for children in the schools using locally sourced produce.

      Indonesia:

In Indonesia Unilever is working with WFP to support an innovative “Home-Grown School Meals Programme” that takes a holistic approach to addressing child malnutrition by:

      • Using ingredients sourced from local farmers and cooking with essential micronutrient powders.

      • Providing education on nutrition, health and hygiene.

Results indicate that when children receive a hot, nutritious meal every day at school, they are more likely to come to school and are able to concentrate better in class.
